August tourist arrivals are up 20% year over year

According to official figures, Sri Lanka’s tourism sector continued to recover in August, with arrivals up 20.4% from the previous year due to significant inflows from India.
According to preliminary data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the nation received 198,235 visitors in the month, up from 164,609 the previous year. With an average of 6,394 visitors per day in August, this increased the number of arrivals to 1.57 million for the first eight months of 2025.
India continued to be the biggest source market, accounting for over a quarter of arrivals with 46,473 tourists. Germany donated 12,500, followed by the United Kingdom with 17,764. China, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, the Netherlands, and Japan were among the other important markets.
Arrivals in August fell slightly short of the 200,359 visitors registered in August 2018, which was roughly in line with pre-crisis norms.
Last week the National Procurement Commission ordered new bids for Sri Lanka’s international marketing campaigns, which is anticipated to take three to four months, according to Tourism Deputy Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe.
While agreements inked with international marketing agencies in 2024 remain mostly underutilized, he added, roadshows and promotions will continue in the interim.
The industry faces challenges in meeting its ambitious three million tourist arrivals target for 2025, requiring at least 1.44 million visitors over the remaining five months. To achieve this target, Sri Lanka would have to draw an average of over 358,000 visitors per month between September and December, which would be far more than any monthly total seen in the years after the pandemic.
