SL launches a digital platform that will change the shrimp farming business
Sri Lanka has introduced the Shrimp Industry Information System (SIIS), the first integrated digital platform for the aquaculture sector. Developed through a collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the national authorities, this initiative marks a significant advance in digital transformation within the seafood industry. The SIIS seeks to modernize the shrimp value chain by creating a cohesive digital ecosystem uniting farmers, laboratories, and policymakers through technologies such as big data, AI, and IoT. The platform aims to enhance productivity, disease management, and supply chain traceability while providing real-time data collection and analytics. The initiative is expected to improve the economic prospects for the aquaculture sector, create jobs, and position Sri Lanka as a leader in smart aquaculture in the region.
The introduction of the SIIS represents a modern approach to aquaculture, integrating advanced technologies to boost productivity and operational efficiency. From an economic perspective, such digital transformation can create significant employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of local communities. The SIIS also addresses prior inefficiencies, allowing timely interventions that can mitigate the effects of disease outbreaks which have historically crippled the sector. Furthermore, by improving supply chain traceability and enhancing biosecurity measures, the SIIS stands to position Sri Lanka competitively in the global seafood market while addressing sustainable practices.
