Sri Lanka increases cultivation of coconuts in North

According to the president’s media division, Sri Lanka intends to use the northern coconut triangle initiative to plant coconuts on 16,000 acres in Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar.
According to the PMD, the project, which was started in 2023, is anticipated to grow to 50,000 acres by 2027.
President Anura Dissanayake was present at the launch of the “Kapthuru Saviya” northern coconut triangle project in Puthukudiyiruppu, which took place in conjunction with World Coconut Day. According to the Ceylon Chamber of Coconut Industries (CCCI), the program is anticipated to increase national output, increasing productivity from 2.7 billion nuts in 2024 to 2.9
The CCCI stated that to achieve Sri Lanka’s 2030 export target of USD 2.5 billion, coconut-based SMEs in the North and East will be created, and yields will be raised by 10–15% annually.
Through partnerships with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Regen Agri, farmers will gain access to regenerative agriculture techniques.
Additionally anticipated is the geo-identification of the products. “Exporters will be able to determine stronger market formulae, secure international recognition, and carve out a premium position for Sri Lankan coconut on the global stage by creating GI-based certification for Sri Lankan coconut products.”
