Shangri-La Reaffirms Commitment to Sri Lanka’s Wildlife with Adoption of Baby Elephant

Shangri-La Colombo and Shangri-La Hambantota have deepened their commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, and meaningful local partnerships through the adoption of a baby elephant — affectionately named El-la (“El” for elephant + “La” for Shangri-La) — in collaboration with the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in Udawalawe.

El-la’s Story

Born in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, El-la’s early journey was marked by hardship. Separated from her herd after falling into an agricultural well, she was rescued by wildlife officers and brought to ETH — a sanctuary dedicated to the care, rehabilitation, and eventual release of orphaned elephants back into the wild.

Over the next five years, Shangri-La has pledged over USD 10,000 to support El-la’s nutrition, veterinary care, and rewilding process. This adoption is not just about protecting one elephant, but about safeguarding a piece of Sri Lanka’s wild heritage for future generations.

A Spirit of Sanctuary

This initiative is part of Shangri-La’s global Sanctuary programme, which embodies the brand’s purpose of protecting what is precious, living in harmony with nature, and creating purpose-led guest journeys.

“El-la is more than a conservation project; she represents our deep and ongoing responsibility to the land, people, and heritage of this island we are proud to call home.”
Refhan Razeen, General Manager, Shangri-La Hambantota

“At Shangri-La, we believe that true hospitality extends beyond service—it embraces stewardship. Supporting El-la’s journey is an embodiment of that belief, and a reminder that care for the wild is care for our future.”
Hervé Duboscq, General Manager, Shangri-La Colombo

Connecting Guests with Conservation

Guests at both properties will be invited to follow El-la’s journey through curated experiences, conservation storytelling, and eco-conscious merchandise — making them part of her inspiring transformation from vulnerable orphan to strong, free-roaming elephant.

With the adoption of El-la, Shangri-La reaffirms its role not only as a leader in hospitality but also as a guardian of Sri Lanka’s living heritage, ensuring that its spirit of sanctuary extends beyond its walls into the heart of the island’s wilderness.
