This landmark event celebrates creativity, unity, and tradition—placing Colombo firmly on the global map of cultural festivals.

A Journey from Local Roots to Global Heights

What began in 2015 as part of the Lokaya Saha Lokayo program has now grown into a world-class festival. Over the years, the organizing team has represented Sri Lanka at prestigious kite festivals in Malaysia, Thailand, India, China, and France, building international recognition before returning home with their boldest edition yet.

What to Expect in 2025

This year’s festival promises to be the most spectacular gathering to date, with:

55 international kite flyers from 25 countries across five continents
🇱🇰 500 Sri Lankan kite enthusiasts
🎶 A vibrant fusion of art, music, dance, and culinary showcases

Among the participating nations are Germany, Netherlands, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Thailand, South Korea, Brazil, Tunisia, Turkey, Algeria, Libya, Nepal, India, Singapore, Reunion Island, France, Cambodia, Ukraine, Australia, and Vietnam—each bringing their own kite traditions and cultural flavor.

Organized for Global Impact

The festival is jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Derana Media Network, under the Colombo Destination Branding Project. Its mission is clear: to position Colombo as a hub for cultural celebration and international friendship, strengthening Sri Lanka’s image as a nation open to the world.

Kites: A Universal Symbol

From ancient Chinese battlefields to today’s European and American festivals, kites have always symbolized freedom, imagination, and human connection. The Colombo International Kite Festival now joins the ranks of iconic global events such as:

Why It Matters

The Derana Colombo International Kite Festival 2025 is more than a spectacle in the sky—it is a statement of identity and diplomacy. It celebrates Sri Lanka’s rich heritage while showcasing the island as a meeting point of cultures, traditions, and creativity.

As hundreds of kites soar high above the Indian Ocean, they will carry with them a powerful message: that Sri Lanka is a place where the world comes together, united in joy and imagination.
